Soluble Mo complex catalysts prepared from Mo-DTC(dithiocarbamate) and Mo-DTP(dithio-phosphate) are characterized during the hydrotreatment of vacuum residues, in order to clarify how active species of Mo sulfides are formed and behaved under the hydrotreatment conditions. Far-Infra Red (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, and TEM observation showed that Mo-S species and MoS_2 lamellar structure are formed above 300 °C, and are higly dispersed to interact with asphaltene macromolecules for their effective hydrocracking.
