Functional groups are prerequisites for the assembly ofbuilding blocks to more elaborate structures for research workin the life sciences field. Functionalization can be mostconveniently and efficaciously accomplished by generating anorganometallic derivative of the aromatic or heterocyclicstarting material and subsequently treating it with theelectrophile of choice. The presence of heterosub stituents facilitates immensely the introduction of the metal (bypermutational halogen/metal or hydrogen/metal intercon-version) and at the same time enables a perfect control of thedesired regioselectivity as will be illustrated by typical examples selected from the indole, pyrazoles, pyridine and quinoline fields.
