This paper concentrates on the numerical simulation and application of constitutive models in the finite element method for analysis of real structures. DYNA3D is employed to simulate a full scale impact tests of guard rails conducted at the Federal Outdoor Impact Laboratory (FOIL). The simulation results are compared with experimental data. In this study a strain rate dependent elastic plastic material model is employed for steel guard rail (in the finite element model). The necessary parameters for the material model were obtained by performing tension tests of the guard rail material. A numerical simulation is successfully performed and the finite element model captured most of the impact behavior of the guard rails tested.
