On the Existence of Summer Sub-tropical Anticyclones

The usual explanation for the existence and strength of sub-tropical anticyclones is that they are associated with radiative cooling and the descending arm of the Hadley Cell. However, this explanation is not consistent with observational evidence of their strength in summer. Idealised experiments with imposed diabatic heating lead to the hypothesis that the summer sub-tropical anticyclones are essentially part of the summer monsoons on the continents to their east, with radiative effects acting as an amplifier of this response.
