A CELLULAR PROCESS MODEL FOR COMPLEX SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

The use of models of the development process of complex systems at the engineering level is considered. It is argued that the use of such models, in conjunction with conventional sequential life cycle models, would yield benefits in several areas including the re-use of design experience and the visibility of considerations relating to design properties and trade offs. A prototype process model is proposed comprising problem-solving cells which can be specialised and interconnected to meet the needs of particular projects. Implementation and usage issues are discussed.
