Stems of 4 species of desert shrubs grown in desert region in Xinjiang in China possess distinct structure features of psammophyte. These features are: 1) thickness cuticle outside the stems, 2) quantity of developed fibre clusters in cortex, especially in Hedysarum scoparium, 3) with wide and narrow vessels in secondary xylem, 4) abundant mucilage ce1]s existing in the parenchyma of cortex and pith.
