In this study, a new design concept of a pipe flange connection having self-sealing performance is proposed to improve sealing performance under high internal pressure. The pipe flange connection having self-sealing performance, called SS flange connection here, has two inner flanges at the inner circumference near the contacting surfaces that are pressed together by internal pressure. The effectiveness of the newly proposed SS flange connection was experimentally examined through pressure tests, and tests under combined loads of internal pressure and external bending moment. It is shown that the SS flange connection have preferable characteristics for use under high internal pressure.
