Use of neutron tomography for airline security

A fast neutron attenuation system that uses a white neutron source and pulsed fast neutron spectroscopy has been used along with neutron tomography to obtain the hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (H, C, N and O) concentrations at specified cuts through sealed containers. A 3D plot of the H, C, N and O number density can be obtained throughout the volume by combining a number of cuts. Three independent ratios C/O, N/O and H/C are obtained from the four number densities and used in a neural network program to predict the presence of explosives and drugs in sealed containers.
