Summary form only given. The first steps in general scene analysis are detection of candidate regions of interest where objects may exist and the reduction of noise, clutter and false alarms. New algorithms to achieve these objectives are described. Initial test results will be given in the presentation. New optical correlator hardware can provide up to 1000 correlations per second. If this hardware is to be of general image processing use, it must be able to achieve different functions necessary in the different levels of computer vision.
