Inspection systems for defect identification of moving, particularly rotating, curved objects are described. Two systems are exploited in this study - the first is based on a scanning illumination system with a single electro-optic detector for line inspection and the second uses a modulated structured light system in conjunction with a scanning CCD camera. Furthermore, unlike traditional structured light systems for range and depth measurement, these systems monitor specularly reflected light making for a more sensitive tool for defect detection. Examples for defect identification on curved surfaces such as glass bottles and cans is demonstrated.
