Diode-laser systems for measurements of concentration of gas pollutants in the atmosphere were reported long ago. The purpose of this work was to develop a simple system which would allow one to carry out routine monitoring of the concentration of any atmospheric gases with the limitation that the gas should have absorption lines in the MIR spectral region (4 - 8 micrometers) and should be stable enough to keep it in cells for periodic calibration of the instrument. This instrument is a result of a long series of research and development work, carried out from 1980 to 1990. Presently, this instrument is manufactured in small quantities (a few samples per year) by the combined team of the General Physics Institute, the Ledebev Physics Institute, and the Central Construction Bureau of Unique Instrumentation of the Russian Academy of Science. It is used for carbon monoxide monitoring.
