A RETROSPECTIVE ON ATTEMPTS TO REDUCE VEHICULAR RISK THROUGH OPERATOR TRAINING

Studies have found that driver error is a primary factor in 80% or more of all vehicular accidents. Quite logically this has spawned efforts and programs directed at accident reduction through improved driver performance, mainly by licensing and training. Carefully controlled studies, however, have failed to discover safety benefits of operator training, regardless of vehicle type. Given that driver error plays such a dominant role in vehicular accidents, why has training proven so ineffective? An examination of accident data reveals that the types of human error most often implicated in accidents are not readily addressed by training. The use of accident analysis supports development and selection of more appropriate strategies for reduction of motor vehicle injuries.
