We describe an experimental investigation into the nonlinear behavior of thin elastic panels in subsonic flow. Specifically, an apparatus is detailed that supports a low aspect ratio panel by clamping it along the spanwise edges while leaving its leading and trailing edges free. The device is mounted in a low Mach-number subsonic flow and strain measurements are taken along the spanwise edge of the panel. Preliminary results are given for a 0.016 inch thick panel with an aspect ratio of 2.72. These indicate that when the angle of attack is approximately zero, the panel diverges statically in the first spanwise (clamped-clamped) mode and the first bending mode (free-free) in the flow direction. A pronounced, leading-edge divergence phenomenon was also observed at nonzero angles of attack.
