APPLICATIONS OF MMDS/LMMDS TECHNOLOGY

While the use of Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Systems (MMDS) technology and its newer "low power" variation (LMMDS), using frequencies in 2.5 to 2.7 GHz range for metropolitan area distribution of analogue television signals is well established in over two dozen countries internationally, there are other services that can be provided using this technology. Many of these services normally require broadband telephone loop technology, employing fibre optics or coaxial cables for provision in metropolitan areas and the wireless alternative may represent the only feasible means of service provision in many countries where broadband loop technology has not yet been widely implemented, or in remote and rural areas. This paper outlines other uses of MMDS/LMMDS technology for provision of two-way video, interactive instructional television, stereo music distribution and high speed, metropolitan area data networking using either packet or dedicated point-to-point techniques.
