Simulation of a modular power distribution system

The design of a large power distribution system has several problems not least of which is the problem of prototyping a large system cost-effectively. This leads to a greater emphasis on the use of CAD techniques for design proving. This in itself has pitfalls such as the excessive simulation times that would be required for large networks of primitive circuits which necessitates the use of behavioural modelling techniques. The author describes an approach to modelling such a system and presents some results of the simulations of such systems. The SABER simulator was chosen as it was the simulator in everyday use within the Power and Control group, and the libraries supplied as standard included all the models that were required to complete initial simulations of behavioural power supplies. The simulations required were transient and small signal AC analyses.
