Defence communications organisations around the world are striving to narrow the gap between the warriors' desk top and his real work environment. Collaborative developments with civil communications carriers offer the latest in commercially available technologies in formats which can survive in a wide range of military environments. This paper describes how the Australian Defence Organisation is deploying highly mobile digital communications as a result of two separate co-operative development projects, undertaken with Australia's second carrier Optus Communications. The Australian warrior is enjoying the benefits of digital cellular mobile telephone technology and even more mobile satellite (L-band) communications through the sensible adaptation of commercial products and services.
