Smelting reduction of iron oxides by means of hydrogen was carried out experimentally in the tammann furnace, the induction furnace and in the plasma furnace. The progress of the reaction was observed by the amount of water which was formed. The grade of utilization of the hydrogen which was achieved is between 2.1 and 24.8 percent. Chemical analyses of the metals produced and of the slags show that besides the iron, especially phosphorus is reduced. The iron is saturated with oxygen. The molten metal could serve as the base material for the production of special clean, carbon-free steels. The smelting reduction by hydrogen is extremely friendly to the environment. The only emissions are vapour and hydrogen. Both can be recycled without difficulties.
