ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:The invention relates to a rotary kiln for usein the subjecting of an ore of an oxide of at leastone element selected from the elements in the IronGroup to a semi-molten reduction-smelting operation,the rotary kiln having a dam ring of an improvedconstruction provided so as to project from theportion of the lining of said kiln which is at theproduct-discharging end thereof. A main burner aswell as an auxiliary burner provided at the dischargeend of the kiln is used to heat the kiln, and acombustion chamber having a high heat insulatingcapability is connected to the kiln. In the combustionchamber, the distance between the free ends of theburners and the discharge end of the kiln is set ata suitable level. The invention also relates to amethod of semi-molten reduction-smelting such an orein the above rotary kiln, this method enables animprovement in the yield of valuable metals, and thecarrying out of such a reduction-smelting operationin the kiln over a long period of time.
