A STUDY ON THE FACTORS AFFECTING SLAG FOAMING AND THE METHODS OF SUPPRESSING

The factors affecting the slag foaming were investigated by measuring the foam height and the bubble diameters in the foam layer which was generated artificially in FeO-SiO_2-CaO melts by injecting the gas. The foaming ratio was increased with the decrease of the surface tension, O/Si atomic ratio and the temperature and increased when the reduction reaction occured in the foam layer. The bubble diameter in the foam layer decreased when reduction reaction occured and the surface active solutes were added in the slag. The fundamental study on the methods of suppression of the slag foaming was studied by the addition of the carboneous materials of different sizes and by blowing gases into the foam layer. By charging the carboneous materials on the foam layer, the foaming was suppressed and the degree of suppression was increased with the increase of cokes sizes. The blowing of the gas into the foam layer was also found to be effecive on suppressing the foaming.
