The three-stage process for smelting reduction is applied to the production of hot metal from fines of ore and coal without metallurgical coke. In the first stage of the process the iron ore is heated up and pre-reduced in a cyclone-heat exchanger system. It is subsequently smelted in the second stage using a smelting cyclone. The final reduction of molten oxide with formation of hot metal takes place in the iron-bath reactor. The general characteristics of the metallurgical reactors are described. A detailed description of the process flow sheet for a production line with a capacity of 250 000 t/a is presented.
