This paper presents an overview of current trends and future perspectives of different solutions for personal electric mobility. After a picture of global trends about oil consumption and CO_2 emissions, a brief review of opportunities and challenges related to electricity as an energy carrier for transportation, is presented, with particular focus on the integration of plug-in electric vehicles into the existing energy network, the recourse to renewable energy sources, and the integration of photovoltaic in hybrid cars.
