Safety and environmental protection are basic requirements for storage operators. UGS operators have to demonstrate to stake-holders their compliance to obtain new authorizations. But even for existing facilities, operated for decades, this demonstration has to be provided, year after year, day after day, to maintain the "licence to operate" their facilities. In different countries, different regulations and different levels of demand from the society could be expressed, but a general trend is going on to put more and more emphasis on safety requirements. This trend is not linear and could make significant steps after significant accidents, leading to new regulations.
