Household Air Pollution from open cooking fires kills 4.3 million people a year - more than HIV, Malaria and TB combined. Social enterprises, Non-Governmental Organizations, governments and bilateral institutions have been working over the past 60 years to reduce exposure to deadly smoke and toxic emissions, as well as the negative impact on the environment by retrofitting kitchens in developing nations with clean burning cookstoves. Despite these efforts, the number of people relying on biomass will increase to 2.7 billion by 2030 because of population growth. Envirofit has been actively involved in selling biomass-fueled clean energy cookstoves since 2007. These stoves reduce smoke and toxic emissions up to 80% and reduce carbon and fuel use by up to 60%. Envirofit has chosen to focus on biomass over the past 10 years as it is the easiest option for consumers to change behaviors - allowing them to consume the same foods and cook in the same manner as their traditional stoves, but with clean burning stove technology. Biomass stoves that improve fuel efficiency also have benefits beyond emissions reduction, improving livelihoods through fuel savings and time savings.
