It is given, that the world's energy supply systems have to change towards renewable and sustainable energy in order to meet demand and expectations of future generations. To achieve this on a global scale, substantial efforts are already talking place to produce and integrate increasing amounts of renewable energy sources into the energy mix. However, producing increasing quantities of renewable energy is only one part of the puzzle, as it also needs to be delivered to the customer in a timely and beneficial fashion. Most renewable energy sources as wind and solar suffer from a certain unpredictability and are fluctuating, which means that they are not flexible on demand. Therefore, it needs solutions to efficiently store and transport renewable energy. As a consequence, switching to volatile renewable energy leads to a rising demand of storable energy carriers. Moreover, energy carriers with high energy density such as Methane will also be required further on to serve industrial, logistical and mobility purposes.
