The shale gas revolution in the North America has a significant impact on the exploration and development of shale gas in China. In 2005 PetroChina began shale gas exploration and evaluation, and experienced four stages including resources evaluation (2005-2009, the resource survey and evaluation had been completed), technology study (2009-2012, vertical well and horizontal well fracturing technology test was implemented), Pilot test (2012-2016, horizontal well fracturing demonstration zones have been set up) and scale production (2016-, the rapid development stage). Since 2012, PetroChina has established two demonstration zones which is Changning-Weiyuan demonstration zone and Zhaotong demonstration zone, with the help of the basin/area screening study to identify sweet spots and the pilot study of field trial to determine the production potential in Longmaxi & Wufeng members. After five years of technique advances, a comprehensive development technique has been established based on the prior studies consisting of determining resource potential and screening sweet production spots, especially on great scale development practice. As a result, hundreds of wells has been drilled and completed in recent years enjoying a higher-and-higher initial production rate, which guarantees the sufficiency of benefit and scale for shale gas development. Until to the end of 2016, PetroChina has attained the commercially feasible production, building an annual production capacity of 3 billion cubic meters (bcm) and obtaining the cumulative production of 3.0 bcm in this year. By the year of 2017, proved reserves accounts for 320 Bcm, total production accounts for 7.5Bcm.
