Disaster Managers can benefit from a real-time view of the situation as it unfolds, but this has previously been prohibitively expensive or impractical to provide, largely due to the requirement for manual data collection and processing. The GIDE project is developing one of the first systems capable of truly addressing this issue by producing orthophoto mosaics of disaster regions in real-time. This capability will be accomplished by leveraging and extending on current technology using a UAV-borne imaging platform with radio communication, automated image processing in a mobile ground station and a web-based dissemination system. Our discussion and analysis demonstrates the potential for the GIDE system to revolutionize decision making for disaster management.
