Cu_3BiS_3 (wittichenite) has been identified as a possible new material for the absorber layer in thin film solar cells. In this paper some results for the CuS-Bi phase diagram at Bi concentration <60 mol.% are presented. This was constructed using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements on alloy samples prepared by closed ampoule annealing. The phase diagram shows that Cu_3BiS_3 is present over a wide compositional range and Bi deficiency will result in Cu_9S_5 and CuS impurities and excess Bi will result in Bi impurities.
