This paper presents experimental data on evaluating metal plate corrosion occurring during natural gas hydrates formation. It has been established that, in formation of natural gas hydrate, the rate of steel plate corrosion is 1.5 times as high as that of steel plates in distilled water in air. The evaluation of the effect of hydrate formation on the metal surface may lead to an understanding of the metal corrosion intensification mechanism and serve as a base for the evaluation of pipeline wear; it can also be used to select a material of reactors for gas hydrate synthesis.
