Authentic pedagogy is a broad term that describes an active learning perspective with a focus on the construction of meaning and intellectual quality in the learning process. Although most of the work associated with authentic pedagogical approaches have been done in conjunction with elementary and secondary school reform, there is a growing body of research on the use of authentic pedagogical instruction in higher education. The primary focus across the literature has been an examination of student performance and other student-oriented outcomes, and authentic pedagogical practices have been shown to have significant impact on higher order thinking and perceptions of authenticity. There are very few studies, though, that have examined the impact of authentic pedagogical methods on the faculty who adopt these practices. One area of particular concern to faculty is how the use of authentic pedagogical approaches will affect student evaluations of their teaching (SET). This presentation will report on a study of the impact of an authentic pedagogical assessment model on SETs as measured by end-of-course evaluations.
