(475) THE FEMALE NUDE: A DIDACTIC ALTERNATIVE FOR THE HISTORY OF ART

As a part of the initial training of teachers, we are shaping with students of teaching social scienceelementary 3rd grade, a curricular proposal based on the educational possibilities of the term “gender”as a model for analyzing education curricular materials. With this iniciative we propose to address theproblem of androcentrism, sexism…in art coming from its complexity without essential statements.Our challenge is to bring future teachers to study the characteristics which are fixed in textbooksregarding the representation of women and their relation with the female stereotypes. The aim is notonly to analyse images of women as a reflection of historical reality but also to find the active role thatthese images have in building social models, taking into account that they can determine our beliefsand behaviours. In this sense, there would be three key parameters to be considered. First of all, notethat the representation of women at a formal and iconographic level is due to what each cultureselects as historical, artistically and aesthetically significant. At the same time, the image representedbecomes structured which means that it determines a way of seeing and thinking about “genders”.Finally, it should be emphasized that the student is also conditioned by its own history and culture.Indeed, assuming that the spectators are located in a position from which they can contemplate andactivate the meaning of the image, it should be fostered, among the students, a critical look with“gender” hierarchies that are present in a patriarchal society and coming from there, be able toeducate people aware about the fact that they may and they have to make personal developmentchoices to lead their lives and to contribute to the development of a truly democratic society. Toillustrate de exhibition we will focus on the analysis of some of the most representative female nudesregarding the artistic production of Julio Romero de Torres.
