A Knowledge Development Conception and its Implementation: Knowledge Ontology, Rule System and Application Scenarios

Knowledge development in an enterprise is about approaches, methods, techniques and tools, that will support the advancement of individual and organizational knowledge for the purpose of an improvement of businesses. An approach for knowledge development in a company is described in this paper. This approach is based on a new conception of knowledge, with the introduction of three knowledge dimensions and conversions between knowledge assets. This conception is implemented in the form of a knowledge ontology. Thus, we can take advantage of reasoning and rules processing, provided by a reasoner in combination with a rule engine. Important scenarios for knowledge development in a company are identified and it is shown how these scenarios can be supported by processing the developed rules. For example, knowledge requirements for a new or existing employee can be gained once the appropriate requirements for a planned project are known as well as the learning options in the company.
