Construction companies need to attain shop and construction drawings in advance not only to start the construction phase on-time, but also to meet the growing demand for residential facilities in Edmonton, Alberta.. Another result of this competitive market is the need for a clear and precise take-off list of materials that will ensure the accuracy of cost estimates. This focus of this paper will be on the automation of shop and construction drawings for framing, the reduction of waste and improved use of materials in the construction of wood houses, built according to several different designs. An algorithm was incorporated into a CAD. This algorithm uses as input any 3D model of a residential facility created in a CAD interface, and then, it produces as output a 3D model for the framing design. In order to minimize the use and waste of material, an optimization model was developed to reutilize the scraps from cuts of studs, plates and sills.
