Function Based Modeling of Diagnostic Requirements

In general, the diagnostic requirements for an electronic control unit (ECU) can be distinguished into two different categories: While infrastructure diagnostic requirements are needed for supervision of ECUs and in-vehicle networks as well as interaction of ECUs with the manufacturing and service environments, functional diagnostic requirements are driven by distributed features that are typically implemented in multiple ECUs. However, currently available design tools are primarily used to develop diagnostic requirements on ECU level. Therefore, the definition of diagnostic requirements still causes a considerable amount of manual work. Furthermore, this manual work leads to quality and traceability shortcomings of diagnostic specifications. In order to reduce these weaknesses this paper describes a method to develop diagnostic specifications on the basis of a functional system design level supported by the industry standards AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) and ODX (Open Diagnostic Data Exchange).
