Void characteristics are the crucial controlling factors to balance the strength and drainage function for drainage asphalt mixture.In order to investigate the void characteristics of drainage asphalt mixture with different gradations,a way using discrete element method to simulate the formation of asphalt mixture specimen was presented.Firstly,the coarse aggregate particles were constructed using the diffusion method based on a central sphere,and through its position relation the asphalt mortar was simulated by the ball,in which the voids were produced by the random algorithm.Then,six specimens with different gradations were built by the virtual"sphere clump",and the"virtual"horizontal slices were obtained by intensively cutting specimen to explore the variation rules of geometric size,quantity and space distribution of voids in the mixture.The simulation results showed that there was a good linear relationship between the total voids areas of slices and the calculated void rate.The void equivalent diameter was mainly distributed in the range of 2 to 6 mm.The larger the passing rates of 2.36mm and 4.75mm,the larger the void number and the smaller the void equivalent diameter.
