Electrical Discharge machining (EDM) is a nonconventional machining technique, which has been commonly used to create dies and mold. Harder Materials can be machined into complex shapes as long as they conduct electricity. Recent advances in the technologies brought the development of new engineering materials, which are hard to machine with traditional machining processes. EDM is capable of machining these materials; given these materials have an adequately high electrical conductivity. In EDM, Material removal rate (MRR) Tool Wear rate and surface roughness (Ra) are important performance measures. Numbers of ways are explored by researchers to improve and optimize MRR along with a reduction in tool wear rate (TWR) and surface roughness (Ra). This paper discusses researches on EDM, involving the enhancement of MRR in conjunction with a little insight into material removal mechanism.
