Line contact is a common mode found in many machine components, such as various gears, roller and needle bearings, cams and followers. In engineering practice, even the contact length can be much greater than the contact width, the surface roughness is actually three-dimensional in nature, so a simplified two-dimensional Reynolds equation is not accurate enough for lubrication analysis. Moreover, the contact length of some line contact components is finite, which means a roller, and the realistic geometry of the roller often includes a crown in the axial direction and round corners or chamfer at the end. In the present study, finite roller lubrication model has been developed, plasto-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (PEHL) for finite roller contact has also been developed to account for the material yielding.
