To solve the vibration problems of centrifugal air compressor gearbox and outlet pipeline in a petrochemical plant, the effect of a tuned mass damper (TMD) on the vibration control of a large and complex compressor was investigated. Based on the principle of TMD vibration suppression, the natural frequencies of the compressor and TMD subsystem were calculated using the finite-element analysis software. According to the theory of continuous-structure multi-mode vibration suppression, the natural frequency range of the TMD subsystem should cover the natural frequency range of the main system. Thus, the designs of three different types of TMD were optimized, and their effects on vibration suppression were simulated. Using the correlation between pipeline and gearbox, the TMDs were installed on the pipelines. The vibration of the pipeline and gearbox significantly reduced after the installation, confirming that a TMD can effectively reduce the vibration of a compressor and contribute to safe and stable operation.
