Heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, e.g., the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide in the production process of hydrocarbons (e.g., Fischer-Tropsch or methanol synthesis) are carried out in bubble columns. However, mathematical description and modeling of such slurry bubble columns is complex and expensive. Decisive influences on the conversion in the reactors are represented by the distribution and interactions of the gas and solid phase as well as the gas-liquid interface, which is limiting local mass transfer.
