High solids anaerobic digestion (HS-AD) is a potential strategy to improve methane production from lignocellulosic organic waste. Three substrates, water hyacinth, banana waste, moringa biomass were analyzed in biochemical methane potential (BMP) digesters under mesophilic conditions. The average cumulative methane yields were 317± 2.9, 234.3 ± 2.9 and 59.3 ± 1.6 mL CH_4/g VS fed for banana waste, water hyacinth and moringa biomass, respectively. It was assumed that the accumulation of ammonia nitrogen and VFA could be limiting factors. Based on the results obtained from this study, it can be concluded that HS-AD is a low-cost method to improve methane production from lignocellulosic biomass.
