In midyear of 2018,PT Panca Amara Utama(PAU)successfully commissioned its 700,000 MTPA ammonia plant located at Central Sulawesi,Indonesia.PAU ammonia plant is the first in the world using KBR’s PurifierTM technology in combination with the KRESTM technology(namely KBR PurifierplusTM)in one plant.KRESTM technology has been successfully implemented in various existing plant revamps(1)(2)(5)(7)for capacity increase,energy reduction or natural gas saving,while PurifierTM technology has been successfully used in both grassroots plants around the world since 1966 as well as the existing plant revamps(6).PAU is the first grassroots plant used PurifierplusTM technology,which makes this plant unique.Commissioning of the PAU ammonia plant was successfully completed in August,2018 with one of the lowest energy and natural gas consumption figures per ton of ammonia.This paper shares the commissioning and startup experience,describes the salient process and design features of the ammonia plant,as well as discusses challenges and issues encountered and key lesson learned during the plant commissioning and startup.
