The paper is concerned with an Electric Drive Unit (EDU) system optimisation. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is strongly convinced that the integration of the constituents of the EDU, gear-box and electric machine, cannot be done down-stream of the development phase. Therefore in the past years has been developed a system optimisation process to achieve the best overall trade-off between concurrent requirements: efficiency on cycle, performance, packaging and cost. As an example of the benefits of the process a P4 (axle split) hybrid architecture is chosen as reference application for this paper. Following the vehicle performance requirements decomposition, two electric machine technology are optimised for the same package; induction asynchronous (IM) motor and internal permanent magnet synchronous (IPM) motor. A single speed versus a multispeed gearbox is also compared. A two speed IPM drive is finally indicated as the most promising candidate in the trade-off between cost and efficiency on cycle for the reference application.
