Simplified numerical modelling of circular concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns

Three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element (FE) modelling is widely used to analyse and predict the behaviour of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) columns, but such models are generally tedious and impractical for global analysis of frames. In contrast, Fibre Beam Element (FBE) models, which are computationally efficient, can achieve the balance between accuracy and simplicity and can be used for global structural analysis. But material models should be defined accurately in FBE models since the material models themselves have to account for the interaction between the steel tube and confined concrete in a CFST column. In this paper, such simplified material models are developed for circular CFST stub columns based on detailed FE modelling. The proposed material models are then utilised in FBE modelling of circular CFST stub columns in ABAQUS. The accuracy of the simplified modelling is verified by a wide range of experimental results, as well as 3D FE modelling.
