Ventilation leakage has been the subject of many studies in the literature, however the main focus has been on ascertaining its impact on the ventilation requirements of the mine. This study aims to study the accuracy of two empirical methods commonly used to incorporate the effects of leakage into auxiliary ventilation design by comparing the results to those of a three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. Results indicate that the two estimation methods yield system pressures which are below that of the ones measured using CFD as a result of not taking into consideration location and size of a ruptures. In this study we propose an empirical relation that is able to predict leakage resistance based on rupture characteristics.
