There are various preventative and constructive controls implemented to minimize the possibility of an explosion occurring in a coal mine. Some controls almost eliminate the sources of and or impact of an explosion. The risk of an explosion however remains. Active explosion barriers can be installed within the face area and active roadway barriers can be used in a dynamic mining environment, as they are not fixed to a certain position and can follow the working face area. This paper discusses "smart" active explosion suppression system functions that can assist to contain and proactively suppress explosions in a dynamic changing work environment.
