Understanding the potential ground motions associated with induced seismicity is a key requirement for conducting hazard and risk assessment. 3D elastic wavefield simulation, normally used in industry for imaging or full-wavefield inversion applications, is used here to gain insight to wavefield effects important to induced seismicity studies. Detailed 3D seismic velocity models developed for active-source seismic imaging can be used to understand field-specific ground motion behaviors. Source mechanism and rupture geometry effects are explored, with emphasis on how hypocenter-to-surface path effects are influenced by structure and stratigraphy. Ground motion prediction for induced seismicity may benefit from wavefield simulations when near-epicenter or higher-magnitude data are incomplete.
