End-to-end testing of optical distribution network in access networks without entering customer's premises

We have developed a novel measurement system for the in-service, centralized end-to-end loss testing of optical distribution networks (ODN), which enables us to perform tests, including on branched fiber sections beyond optical splitters, without needing to enter the customer's premises. The proposed technology is based on end-reflection assisted Brillouin analysis, and is, to our best knowledge, the first practical Brillouin-based loss testing technique. We report the performance of our measurement system and describe some emerging applications related to access ODN maintenance.
