We have developed a novel optical cable joint. The joint has a 24-connector array consisting of new high-count 84-fiber MT connectors, and it can efficiently connect 2,016 single-mode optical fibers simultaneously. The fabricated 84-fiber MT connector, which accommodates more fibers than any previously reported MT connector, provides a low average insertion loss of 0.40 dB. The MT connector can be attached to high-density optical fiber cables, and it significantly shortens the time needed to join the cable.
