The combination of poly(piperazinyl, morpholinyl, triazine) and ammonium polyphosphate has been shown to be an effective non-halogen flame retardant for polyolefins. This paper describes experimental work undertaken to maximize flame retardancy, optimize compound properties and define the process limitations of the triazine technology. The cone calorimeter was used to measure heat release rate, smoke generation and mass loss. The Bombardier SMP 800C apparatus was used to quantify potentially hazardous gaseous by products of combustion. Thermal stability of the triazine technology is compared to aluminum trihydrate, magnesium dihydroxide and decabromodiphenyl ethane in combination with antimony trioxide. Physical properties, limiting oxygen index, flexural modulus, hardness, short term heat aging and low temperature brittleness are measured on compounds for reference against potential application in riser and plenum cable constructions.
