A wavelet-based optical flow method is presented for performing high-resolution planar velocimetry. The WOF method is compared to a typical correlation-based method using commercial PIV software on data from a direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence and experimental results from a series of non-reacting turbulent jet experiments. The presented WOF method outperforms the correlation method in terms of accuracy and spatial resolution and produces dense (one velocity vector per pixel) velocity fields. It does not make assumptions about the velocity field other than it is spatially regular, and hence can be applied to a wide range of experimental flows.
