A risk assessment for fuselage splice joints containing multiple site damage (MSD) has been conducted following the methods below. Transport category airplanes airworthiness standards on preventing structure from occurring widespread fatigue damage was analyzed. Finite element method (FRANC 3D) was used to characterize the MSD cracks and cracks interaction effect. A program containing fracture mechanics calculation and Monte-Carlo method was developed to conduct probability analysis and failure mode analysis. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects on MSD and fatigue behavior.
